ABOUT MR. O'NEILL
Mark O'Neill has been an educator and coach for thirty-seven years and this will be year thirty at WCHS. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1981 and his Master of Science degree in 1993 from Illinois State University. He began his teaching career at St. Patrick's, Washington, IL in 1981. He taught K-8 Physical Education, coached 5th and 6th grade basketball and coached the entire boys' and girls' track programs. He was also their Athletic Director.
Mark began coaching Freshman football at WCHS in 1982. In the Fall of 1988, Mark began teaching at Washington Community H. S. ; teaching Physical Education and Driver's Education. In 1999, Mr. O'Neill pioneered our weight training program in physical education. In addition to teaching Physical Education, Mark became Driver's Education Department Chair in the Fall of 2009 and now teaches Driver's Education full-time.
He was the boys head tennis coach at WCHS from 1989 to 1991 and was an assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1995. Currently Mark has been an assistant boys track coach since 1992, and has been an assistant football coach at WCHS since 1982.
Mark is very active in the teacher's union at the local level -Executive Board- (WEA), state level - Region Council Representative - (IEA), and national level - State Delegate to the NEARA - (NEA).
Mr. O'Neill graduated from Wyoming Community High School (now Stark County H.S.) where he played and lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track all 4 years.
He married Agnes Whalen (deceased - October 2011) in October 1982. Mark has 2 sons - John (Elizabeth) and Grandson Drake live in Washington, IL and Dan in St. Louis, MO. Mark is an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team!
Interesting facts: - His team won a State Championship in 1985 as coach of the St. Patrick's 8th Grade Girl's Track Team! - In 1986, he was coach of the St. Pat's boys track team that placed 4th in the state! - He also was a part of the coaching staff in 1983 when the Football Panthers place 2nd in the state football playoffs and in 1985 when the Washington Panthers captured the State 4A Football title! Mark took two 11-12 year-old baseball teams to Cooperstown, New York and played in Cooperstown Dream's Park National Tournaments in 2000 and 2004.
